Dean Saunders - 7th August v Middlesbrough -
This was City's first game since being promoted to the top flight after a 77 year absence. In pre-season Paul Jewell had chosen to assemble an experienced side that he felt could keep City in the division, earning City the nickname of 'Dad's Army' in the media. Although every pundit wrote off City before a ball was kicked, the Bantams surprised a few people with an opening day win at the Riverside Stadium. With the game at 0-0 in the dying minutes, Lee Mills picked up the ball of the right side of the field to play a delightful chip in behind the 'Boro defence. A desperate Paul Gascoigne attempted to cut out the pass with a flying header, but missed, leaving veteran Saunders in on goal. The Wales international kept his cool to slide past former City keeper Mark Schwarzer from just inside the area, then wheeled away with a goal celebration mocking an old man with a walking stick in response to the negativity directed towards the club in the media. After one game, City were 6th in the table. |

Dean Windass - 1st November v Liverpool
City had beaten Leicester 3-1 at home in their previous home game so travelled to Anfield with great confidence after the Reds stuttering start to the season which had seen them win two and lose three from their opening five games. City started the game well and scored a belter through Dean Windass. Windass dummied a ball played up top allowing it to run for Lee Mills and although Mills failed to control the ball properly Windass took his chances with a half-volley and was rewarded as his outside of the boot effort from 20 yards nestled into the corner of the net. Nevertheless, Liverpool recovered through a Titi Camara equalizer and a Jamie Redknapp penalty - Windass hit referee Jeff Winter around the back of the head when belting the ball away in frustration at the decision - and a Vegard Heggem goal saw Liverpool win 3-1. |

Dean Windass - 5th February v Arsenal -
City had beaten Watford at home in their previous home game but faced a trickier task the following week as they entertained Arsenal, who were just a point off league leaders Leeds at the time. Gilles Grimindi fouled Windass 20 yards out from goal and as David Seaman sluggishly lined up his wall for the resulting free-kick, Windass took full advantage to catch the England 'keeper off guard, firing a cheeky free-kick into the corner to give City an early lead. Although Thierry Henry scored a spectacular equalizer, City claimed a 2-1 victory after Dean Saunders later nutmegged Seaman for City's winner. |

Jamie Lawrence - 12th February v West Ham -
City were buoyed by a home win against Arsenal in their previous game and only lay in the relegation zone behind Derby by virtue of inferior goal difference. City had won just two and lost the other ten away games they had played during the season and travelled to Upton Park to face tenth placed West Ham United. Although City fell behind in this goal-fest they amazingly battled back to go 4-2 up at one point, with Lawrence, sporting a bright red haircut at the time, scoring the pick of the bunch. The City man cut inside from the right and hit a wonderful left foot curler past debutant Steven Bywater into the top corner. However, City amazingly left the game empty handed after a youthful Frank Lampard netted West Ham's fifth goal to secure a 5-4 win for the home side. |

Peter Beagrie - 12th March v Leeds -
City entertained local rivals Leeds at Valley Parade in search of their fifth home win of the season but slipped two goals behind to their second placed opponents. However, they rescued a late consolation through Peter Beagrie and what a goal it was. The tricky winger hit an unstoppable thunderbolt from 25 yards that flew straight into the top left hand corner past Nigel Martyn. The defeat marked the start of a bad run for City who lost the next 5 games also. |

Dean Windass - 21st April v Derby
City had lost their last six games coming into this game but saw Derby, two places and six points ahead of them, as ideal opponents to end that horrible run. Although they had scored just two goals in their previous six games, City racked up four goals at Valley Parade yet still did not win the game. After Derby took the lead at 2-1, Dean Windass scored a cracker for City after collecting a Steve Elliott header, firing a swerving shot along the ground and into the bottom corner to draw the scores level at 2-2. The game ended 4-4, however. |

John Dreyer - 24th April v Sunderland -
A run of six straight defeats in March and April left City in a precarious position at the bottom of the table but a point from a 4-4 thriller with Derby at Valley Parade stopped the rot and gave everyone a lift ahead of a trip to Sunderland. The Mackems were riding high in 7th place and conceded, on average, less than a goal a game and so the trip looked daunting, but City snatched all three points thanks to a goal from the unlikeliest of sources - defender John Dreyer. Peter Beagrie crossed from the left and although his first cross was cleared, he picked up the ball again to pick out a towering Dreyer steaming in at the back post to head past Thomas Sorenson. The win closed the gap to safety to two points and gave City belief as their next opponents, Wimbledon, were the team directly above them in the table. |

David Wetherall - 14th May v Liverpool -
A 3-0 defeat away to Leicester City in their previous game left City in the relegation zone heading into the last game of the season. With either City or Wimbledon (above City on goal difference five goals better off) joining Sheffield Wednesday and Watford in going down at the end of the day the pressure was on City for their home game against Liverpool who themselves had everything to play for - they were battling for a Champions League spot with Leeds. The crucial goal came in the 13th minute after City won a free-kick in the right channel. Full-back Gunner Halle swung in the cross and David Wetherall rose majestically to head home into the top corner from 12 yards past a helpless Sander Westerveld. City managed to keep hold of their lead to win the game and with Wimbledon losing at Southampton, City maintained their top-flight status. |
